India Raises Alarm After Firing on Tankers Near Strait of Hormuz

India has formally protested to Iran after two vessels flying the Indian flag came under fire close to the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, escalating concerns over the safety of global shipping routes.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Iranian ambassador to New Delhi, Dr Mohammad Fathali, was called in for urgent talks on Saturday evening. During the meeting, Indian officials expressed serious concern over the incident and stressed the need to ensure the protection of merchant ships and crew operating in the region.

One of the affected vessels, identified as the Sanmar Herald, reportedly altered its course near Larak Island shortly after the incident, highlighting the immediate risks faced by commercial shipping in the area.

Indian authorities emphasized that safe passage through the Strait is critical, not just for India but for global trade. They also pointed out that Iran had previously played a positive role in facilitating secure transit for India-bound ships, urging Tehran to restore that cooperation without delay.

Calling the attack a “serious incident,” New Delhi pressed Iran to take swift action and ensure such events are not repeated. In response, the Iranian envoy assured that India’s concerns would be conveyed to the relevant authorities in Tehran.

The development has once again drawn attention to rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for oil shipments and international maritime trade, where any disruption can have far-reaching economic and geopolitical consequences.
