Pakistan Restores Normal Speed Limits on Motorways and Highways

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to restore the original speed limits on Pakistan’s motorways and national highways, reversing the temporary restrictions that were introduced earlier as part of fuel-saving measures.

According to the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP), cars and light transport vehicles (LTVs) will once again be allowed to travel at speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour on motorways. Similarly, the speed limit for public service vehicles (PSVs) and heavy transport vehicles (HTVs) has been restored to 110 kilometers per hour.

The same decision applies to national highways, where previously approved speed limits for all categories of vehicles have also been reinstated.

Authorities have urged motorists to continue following traffic regulations and drive responsibly despite the restoration of higher speed limits. Officials emphasized that road safety remains a top priority and that drivers should avoid reckless behavior while traveling.

The government had reduced speed limits earlier this month as part of a broader austerity campaign aimed at lowering fuel consumption. The move came amid concerns over rising global energy prices and disruptions in fuel markets caused by escalating tensions and conflict in the Middle East.

Officials had stated at the time that the temporary restrictions were introduced under directives to promote energy efficiency and reduce unnecessary fuel usage across the country.

In addition to lowering speed limits, the government also announced several other cost-cutting and fuel-conservation measures. These included a 50 percent reduction in fuel allocations for official vehicles and plans to allow half of public-sector employees to work remotely. However, workers involved in essential public services were exempted from the work-from-home arrangement.

With fuel supply concerns easing, authorities have now withdrawn the speed restrictions, providing relief to commuters, transport operators, and long-distance travelers across Pakistan.
