Cristiano Ronaldo Set for Historic Sixth FIFA World Cup with Portugal

At 41 years old, football legend Cristiano Ronaldo is ready to lead Portugal once again on the world’s biggest football stage after being officially included in Portugal’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez announced the squad on Tuesday, confirming that Ronaldo will become the first player in history to appear in six FIFA World Cups. The veteran forward, currently playing for Al Nassr, continues to break records despite his age.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United superstar remains the highest goal scorer in men’s international football with 143 goals for Portugal. However, one major achievement still missing from his incredible career is a World Cup trophy.

Football fans around the world could also witness another iconic showdown between Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, as the Argentine captain is also expected to feature in what may be his sixth and final World Cup appearance.

Despite receiving a red card during Portugal’s final qualification match against Ireland, Ronaldo escaped a lengthy suspension and remains available for the tournament.

Martinez selected a strong and balanced squad filled with experienced stars and exciting young talent. Ronaldo’s club teammate Joao Felix was included, along with several players from Paris Saint-Germain such as Vitinha, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes, and Goncalo Ramos.

Portugal’s midfield will also feature key names like Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva, giving the team strong creative options heading into the tournament.

Speaking to reporters, Martinez dismissed concerns about Ronaldo’s age and fitness. According to the coach, the World Cup environment often brings out the best in experienced players regardless of their age or recent club form.

Ronaldo had already hinted last year that the 2026 tournament could be the final World Cup of his legendary career. The Portuguese captain recently experienced heartbreak after Al Nassr’s defeat to Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League Two final, where he was seen emotional after the match.

However, Martinez believes joining the national team will help Ronaldo regain confidence and focus ahead of the competition.

The Portugal coach also paid tribute to late Portuguese striker Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident in 2025. Martinez said the team would carry Jota’s spirit and inspiration throughout the tournament.

Before starting their World Cup journey, Portugal will play friendly matches against Chile and Nigeria. Their campaign officially begins on June 17 against DR Congo. Portugal will then face Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K.
