Punjab Cracks Down on Overcharging: More Than 20 Bus Terminals Sealed in Lahore

Punjab authorities launched a large-scale operation against illegal fare collection and transport rule violations in Lahore, sealing over 20 bus terminals and arresting six people during the crackdown.

The action took place after growing complaints from passengers about excessive ticket prices, poor facilities, and dangerous travel practices at major transport hubs across the city.

The inspection was carried out at Lahore’s main Lari Adda by Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar, Adviser to the Chief Minister Zeeshan Malik, and Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali Aijaz.

During the visit, officials reviewed transport conditions, checked passenger facilities, and examined reports of buses charging fares above government-approved rates. Authorities also took notice of unsafe travel arrangements, including passengers being forced to sit on vehicle rooftops.

According to officials, more than 20 transport terminals were sealed for violating transport regulations, while six suspects were detained on charges related to overcharging and other illegal practices. A terminal administrator was also suspended during the operation.

The crackdown follows repeated public complaints about transport operators allegedly exploiting travelers, especially on busy intercity routes. Passengers had raised concerns over unfair ticket pricing, overcrowding, and lack of proper safety measures.

Speaking during the operation, Bilal Akbar said the Punjab government would continue taking strict action against transport companies involved in illegal overcharging. He emphasized that exploiting passengers would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Zeeshan Malik stated that the provincial administration was determined to eliminate illegal profiteering and break the influence of transport mafias operating at bus terminals throughout Punjab.

Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali Aijaz added that authorities are working to improve discipline, safety standards, and overall service quality at public transport facilities. He warned that any negligence or violation of transport laws would result in immediate action.

The latest operation signals the Punjab government’s tougher stance on transport regulation and passenger protection in Lahore and other parts of the province.
